PhD awardings |
Mr. Hieu Quang Ngo from Vietnam. His research resulted in a web-based flood modelling system that can provide rapid and sufficiently accurate estimates of flood risk for Can Tho city in Vietnam's Mekong Delta. Mr. Vitali Díaz Mercado from Mexico for research that uses monitoring, modelling and other methods to predict droughts and help people cope with them. Mr. Mohaned Sousi from Palestine for research assesses the biological stability of drinking water produced with different water treatment technologies, with a focus on reverse osmosis and remineralization treatment. Mr. Chalachew Mulatu from Ethiopia for research on how a dam in Ethiopia should be operated to reduce harmful downriver consequences. |

Blue-green infrastructure wins Public Choice Award in European Commission competition |
The urban innovation project BEGIN, as part of which 10 cities and six research institute developed solutions and shared best practices to deal with extreme weather events and enhance climate change adaptation, won most public votes in the European Commission’s Regiostars Awards 2021 competition. Dr. William Veerbeek, a researcher in urban climate adaptation said: “The award is an acknowledgement that the public agrees that blue-green measures are necessary to safeguard the future in climate change.” |

Partnership with Iraqi universities |
Iraq needs highly skilled water professionals to tackle its multifaceted water crisis. IHE Delft, a partner to Iraq in its efforts to develop water capacity, and Iraqi stakeholders agreed to strengthen cooperation at a workshop held in November.

Mexico and IHE Delft intensify cooperation |
It is agreed to intensify cooperation for sustainable management of water and sanitation in a letter of intent signed by Ambassador Jose Antonio Zabalgoitia Trejo and Professor Eddy Moors, Rector of IHE Delft.

Can the buzz of dragonflies at the shores of Mabamba Bay in Uganda inspire future naturalists and citizen scientists? A new illustrated field guide that highlights 36 different dragonfly species aims to encourage visitors to East African lakes to observe not just the birds the area is famous for, but also insects. |

World Toilet Day 2021: Value toilets - and what goes into them |
The research of Richard Mwembe & Niharika Sharma, recent graduates of the 1-year MSc in Sanitation, focuses on the value that faecal excrements can have in households as compost for agriculture and as fuel for cooking. Their research goes a step beyond ‘Valuing Toilets’, this year's World Toilet Day theme, by looking at the added value of what often disappears down the drain. |
